Although my ideas are still swimming in my head and it is subject to change, the idea I seem to have right now is taking all that Laura Miller had to say and pitting it against what I'm finding on the internet.
I would like to compare Miller's idea that the double eyelid surgery is not fully an emulation of Western beauty, but rather something unique, and compare that to what is being portrayed in the media and discovering whether or not the internet is adding to the argument that it is in fact a surgery to look more western.
-I will have to analyze the websites I'm finding and reading what they say and see what image they're trying to portray
-I will read other articles I find on the internet and see what the Asians living in the West have to say about it
-maybe I'll look at other forms of media and see how this surgery is being portrayed
Thus far the questions I have are:
-What are the reasons for this surgery?
- What is being portrayed?
-Is this surgery a Western or a Japanese construction?
And I'm looking for more questions to ask.
Please comment and tell me how to make this project better and what other avenues I should explore.

Yeah...(the video shows the girl giving herself a folded eyelid without surgery) And I hope this was helpful and that this counted as a comment!
I really find this idea of surgery as extremely interesting. I go to an eye clinic in Philadelphia, and one of the things that they also do in the building is this type of eyelid reduction, so as I sit there for an hour or two these ads just keep coming on. Given that (as we discussed in class) this type of surgery seeks to be noticeable, instead of hiding a part of the body, it's just so crazy to see how such a heavily stereotyped aspect of a culture can be surgically removed to a point of being considered "normal". I mean really, the idea that there is a normalcy is just wacky because it's all being deciphered from a viewpoint, where normalcy is completely in the eye of the beholder. Just blows my mind sometimes to think about these types of surgical options and underlying motives behind them.
ReplyDeleteYay Quinn-face!
ReplyDeleteI like this topic, probably because I my love for things medical, but anyways... I'll post my question from class, since I know I'd forget it too... XD
Do you think you'll examine how a person is viewed when they get this surgery? Like, you know in America how there are several thoughts that immediately pop up in one's mind: Why would they do that? Omg, they must be rich... Are they that shallow that they can't just except the way they are?
You said that there's a type of attitude that says that you should look beautiful not for your sake, but everyone else's... Is that how things are portrayed?
QUIIIIN! You're amazing for choosing this topic. I know that I just discussed it with you, are you going to do some videos?
